Satellite Maps + Internet = Dangerous???

I’ve been hearing talk and reading blogs about this subject for years.  I just never wrote about it until today.

Here’s the “dilemma”, if there really is one.  We have satellite map technology.  We have had this for years now.  We have the ability to see buildings in 3D with satellite imagery, and amazing landmarks.  And there is certainly no downside to that…on a personal level.  But what about at a government level?  What about the places where secret military operations take place that we don’t know anything about?  Well, we don’t know anything about them, but there are a few people that do.  And what if they mark down the name of that building in Google Maps or Google Earth, or some other satellite map program that anyone with internet access could see?  Like perhaps our military enemies?

Is it our right to have this knowledge?  Could it be problematic in the wrong hands?  Any knowledge could, theoretically, be dangerous in the “wrong hands”, I suppose.  It just drives me batty trying to imagine who exactly are these wrong hands, and what is the knowledge that they mustn’t have.  And how much of this fear-mongering is faulty anyway, a distraction so that we can’t see something which is an ACTUAL threat?  How do we really know which proposed enemies are actual enemies, or just made out to be enemies by the media?  Well, we don’t.

So what’s my point?  I don’t know.  I’m just posing ideas.  These are things I think about and maybe you do too.  Or maybe you’ve never thought of any of this until now.  In any case, feel free to do your own investigation and see what you come up with.
