The Creepy-ish Google Latitude Makes Good

Filed under: Satellite maps, current events

I wrote in an earlier blog post about the new Google Latitude, Google’s newest location-based service which allows you to locate anyone who is using Latitude, and conversely allows anyone to locate YOU if you’re using it.

In my prior article I stated that I felt it was stalkerish and had zero intention of using it.  And while I do still feel that way, I have to say that occasionally a situation happens that makes me question that viewpoint of mine and consider even *gasp* installing Latitude.

Google Earth Thief Busted

Tom Berge, a known thief in London, was just busted AGAIN…just three weeks after his last arrest.  His MO was to search Google Earth for historic buildings in the London area, scale up them, steal the valuable lead off the roofs and then sell it to companies who buy scrap metal.  All in all Berge stole about $200,000 US in rooftop lead at 30 different locations.

He got off easy after his last arrest, only having to endure a hundred hours of community service with a suspended sentence.  But having gotten caught yet again, just three weeks later, the courts weren’t so easy on him.  This time he has to serve a year in jail.

How to Get Your Next Trip Paid For by Giant Corporate Entities

Well I don’t know if this would work for you or me, but it worked for Olly Hicks.  He decided to become the first person to travel across the world by himself in a rowboat.  And Virgin decided this was worthy of their sponsorship.  So they’re footing the bill for this excursion.  And so Mr. Hicks’ rowboat, the “Flying Carrot” now boasts the Virgin logo.  Additionally, Google wanted to be part of this adventure, so they have taken care of all the satellite and web tools so that you can follow this whole trip on Olly’s blog, see where he is currently, etc., track the whole thing.

Black Friday Satellite Imagery Deals

You’re already a fan of satellite imagery most likely, since you’re here at our blog.  So I thought you might be interested in finding out some of the big savings you can get for the day after Thanksgiving “Black Friday” sales.  If you can tolerate ridiculous crowds and parking debacles, it really is an amazing day for savings.

In case there are those of you who don’t actually know why the day after Thanksgiving is called Black Friday it’s because historically it is the day that business go financially from red to black.  Big sales and long lines.  But sooo worth it, especially now with the tumultuous economic scene we’ve been experiencing in the US recently.
