Satellite Imagery for Fires
While not the happiest, most positive use for satellite images, Wildfire Today blog really shows the value of satellite mapping technology when it comes to the natural disasters of fire which occur on our planet.
Using Google Earth, they are able to accurately display the location of wildfires while they’re occurring. This has many benefits, not least of which is to check if the homes of yourself or your loved ones are in danger. Maybe you don’t watch TV or listen to the radio all time and prefer surfing the web. Well, if that’s the case then Wildfire Today is the fire site for you.
I was checking out their site today, and there are a lot of great features. Having spent a good deal of my adult life in Southern California (wildfire central basically), I definitely know the importance of being as informed as you can be about the locations of wildfires in your area. Wildfire Today offers thermal maps, evacuation maps, a button to give Wildfire Today your number and have them immediately call you back if you have important wildfire-related information, as well as several different ways to receive news and alerts.
The link I gave above is to the most current wildfire article they’ve written, just so you can see what kinds of data and imagery they offer. Not be a harbinger of bad news, but if you live in an area prone to wildfires, it really behooves you to check out Wildfire Today, and subscribe to this website’s feed in one of the many ways that they offer. Or, alternately, you could always move to a place that doesn’t have wildfires. It’s an option.
