New Locations for Google Street View

Yesterday Google announced that it’s launching street view for 25 cities across the UK.  I think here in the US we take street view in Google for granted, since we’ve had it for a while now.  But a lot of places in the world have not had this capability so it’s very exciting.

The newest street view cities are London, Edinburgh and Oxford.

Last time I went to London, which wasn’t that long ago, my friend had a map book that contained all the maps of all areas of London.  According to him, this is what everyone in London used to get around.  Now with Google Maps and street view, Londoners can add this map book to their collection of dusty, already-read or outdated books on their shelves.  This is even more important for London that other cities, as London can be quite difficult to navigate around in.  The same street can change names 5 times in a couple miles.  Street signs are on buildings and obscured by one thing or another and hard to locate.  There are many reasons that street view will help the citizens and travellers of London.  A lot.

I can’t even imagine life before Google Maps and especially street view.  Before I got the apartment I currently live in, I would check the neighborhood of advertised apartments by looking at street view.  That saved me countless hours of driving and wasted time that I could spend doing something more productive.  Like work.  So in that sense, I saved a good week or two in pay just from having street view.  That’s true.
